I've gone through more phone tripods than I care to admit. Flimsy plastic legs, remotes that need three AAA batteries and still don't work past six feet, clips that scratch your phone — the usual. So when the MQOUNY MagSafe Tripod Stand crossed my path, I was skeptical but curious enough to try it.
Spoiler: it's genuinely good. Not perfect. But good in ways that matter.
The MagSafe Part Actually Works
Let's start here because it's the whole point. The magnetic ring snaps onto the back of your iPhone and holds it in place. No spring-loaded clamp, no adjusting pressure, no worrying that your phone is about to tip forward mid-video. It just sticks.
That said — if you're using an Android or an older iPhone without MagSafe, the kit includes a metal ring you stick to the back of your case. Works the same way once it's on. Not quite as elegant, but functional.
The Selfie Stick Folds Down Smaller Than You'd Expect
The "pocket size" claim isn't marketing fluff. Collapsed, this thing fits in a jacket pocket without creating a weird bulge. I've taken it hiking, to family events, on a weekend trip. It doesn't add meaningful weight to a bag.
Extended, it gives you enough reach to get a good angle for solo shots or group selfies without doing the awkward arm-stretch thing. The extension is smooth — no sticky joints, no wobble once locked in place.
The Remote Is Rechargeable (and That Matters More Than You Think)
Disposable battery remotes are annoying. You forget to check if it works, you're mid-shoot, and you're hunting for a CR2032 at a gas station. The MQOUNY remote charges via USB, which means it lives with your other cables and you actually remember to charge it.
Range is solid for casual use. I've used it across a living room and outdoors in decent light without issues. Not a professional broadcasting setup, but for travel and personal content it does the job.
Using It as a Tabletop Tripod
This is where I use it most. The legs fold out and sit flat on a table, counter, or any flat surface. Stable enough for stationary video — cooking demos, desk setup shots, zoom calls where you want your phone at eye level. The legs aren't going to replace a full-size tripod for outdoor photography in wind, but indoors they're solid.
A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Buy
The MagSafe connection is strong but not indestructible. If you knock the phone off a table, it'll detach. That's probably the right trade-off (better than the whole tripod going over), but worth knowing.
The metal ring for Android phones requires you to commit — peel and stick means it's staying on that case. Not a dealbreaker, just something to think about if you swap cases a lot.
Also: the tripod legs work best on flat surfaces. Anything uneven and you'll spend time fiddling.
Who Should Actually Buy This
If you're someone who takes a lot of solo content — travel videos, workout clips, recipe reels — and you're tired of propping your phone on a stack of books, this is a low-friction upgrade. It's compact enough to always have with you, which is the thing that makes gear actually useful.
If you need a studio tripod for serious video production, this isn't it. But I don't think that's who it's for.
For the price, the rechargeable remote alone makes it worth it over the cheaper alternatives that come with disposable battery remotes. The MagSafe mount is the other leg up — once you've used a magnetic snap instead of a clamp, it's hard to go back.
